Rotary International is an international service organization whose stated purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and to advance goodwill and peace around the world. It is a non-political and non-sectarian organization open to all people regardless of race, color, creed, religion, gender, or political preference. There are 34,282 member clubs worldwide, and 1.2 million individuals, known as Rotarians, have joined.

Rotary was founded in Chicago February 23, 1905 after a young attorney, Paul P. Harris, invited three other businessmen---a coal dealer, a mining engineer and a merchant tailor---to meet with him to discuss an idea. Harris hoped to form a group of businessmen with a mission to share camaraderie and to enlarge their circle of business and professional acquaintances. Their discussions led to formation of a men's club with membership limited to one representative from each business and profession that would meet weekly in turn at each member's place of business.

Since its inception, Rotary members have been addressing challenges around the world.

Rotary is committed to service, dreams big and sets bold goals.  Rotary began its fight against polio in 1979 with a project to immunize 6 million children in the Philippines. Today, polio remains endemic in only three countries — Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan - down from 125 in 1988.   Just 37 polio cases were confirmed worldwide in 2016, which is a reduction of more than 99.9 percent since the 1980’s, when the world saw about 1,000 cases per day.  Since 1985 Rotary has contributed nearly $1.2 billion and countless volunteer hours to the protection of more than two billion children in 122 countries.

The first motto of Rotary in 1911 was “He Profits Most Who Serves Best”.  There have been other mottoes through the years, but in 1989 “Service Above Self” was established as the principal motto.  The Object of Rotary…Service Above Self… is to encourage and foster…
Fellowship as an opportunity for service; High ethical standards in business and professional life; The ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, work and community life; and, The advancement of international understanding and goodwill worldwide.

The Four Way Test guides Rotarians of the things we think say or do
  • Is it the TRUTH?
  • Is it FAIR to all concerned
  • Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  • Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
